How To: Create a new Projection Method

Problem/Symptom:

How can I set the coordinate system in my database or grid when the projection method doesn´t exist in the list?

Environment:

Oasis montaj, Target and Target for Arcgis

Resolution:

Create a projection method to apply in a database:

  1. With the GDB open, go to Coordinates > Set projection.
  2. Select your current X and Y channels and click on the Projection button. The window that will open shows you the current projection of your database.
  3. Select Projected (x,y) in the Coordinate System section. Select your Datum and Local Datum Transform as well.
  4. For the Projection Method option, click the double arrows located to the right side of the dropdown so that you can see the New button. Click on this button and a new window will open.
  5. Specify a name for this new coordinate system and you will be able to use it in the future as your projection method when defining a coordinate system.
  6. Select the length unit and also the projection type.
  7. In the same window, specify all necessary parameters related to this new method including Latitude and Longitude of natural origin, Scale factor, False easting and False northing. Your new Projection Method will be available for selection in the dropdown list and will be saved for use in future projects.

Create a projection method to apply to a grid:

  1. Go to Grid and Image and select Properties...
  2. Select your grid from the dropdown list available and click Next.
  3. In the next 2 windows, click Modify and CoordSys.
  4. Follow the same steps as above after step 3.
