How To: Display a TIFF World file with the correct coordinates
Objective:
I have a *.tif file with an associated *.tfw file. How do I open this in Oasis montaj/Target so that the correct coordinates and projection for the file are displayed in the status bar?
Environment:
Oasis montaj, Target and Oasis montaj Viewer
Steps:
- Go to Grid and Image > Display > Image (bmp, tiff, etc.)...
- Click on Browse (...), beside the Image parameter
- Select "Tiff Image (*.tif)" from the Files of type drop menu and choose the *.tif file you want to open.
- Click Open on the Image (use Browse) dialog. **Do not choose "Geo TIFF (*.tif)" as the file format**
- Set the Location parameter to "default registration"
- Click New Map to place the image in a new map or Current Map to place the image in an already open and active map
- The file will be displayed and the correct coordinates will be visible in the status bar.
Notes:
TIFF World files (*.tif together with a *.tfw) do not contain projection information. The *.tfw file is an ascii file that defines the resolution as well as the coordinates for the upper left corner of the image.
To set the projection for an image:
Grid and Image > Utilities > Modify Coordinate System for Grid File(s).
If you have run through steps 1 through 7 described above, your new map will not have a projection system. If you wish to have a projected map, you need to go through steps 1-7 again after modifying the projection for the *.tif file. Setting the projection for your *.tif is useful for being able to reproject it on-the-fly into a map that uses a different projection system.
