How To: Digitize lines to a map and extract to a data file

|

Problem/Symptom:
How can I digitize lines to a map, save them to a database and extract them to a file, and then display them on a map?

Environment:
Oasis montaj v7.0 and Target v7.0.

Resolution:

1. Use Map Tools > CAD Tools > Digitise to XYZ file. Specify an output xyz filename, overwrite option, and significant digits you want to use. If you want to extract grid "Z" values with the coordinate locations, specify this by browsing for the appropriate grid under 'Grid name'.

2. Draw your first line on the map.

3. Right click on the map and select done once the first line has been completed.

4. Open the new .XYZ file in a text editor and add a line above the coordinates to name this line. Be sure to save the XYZ afterwards.
e.g.

Line 100
-16657690 -7430138
11663990 16295950

5. Create a new database, and drag and drop the XYZ file into the database. Can also use Database > Import > Geosoft XYZ.

6. Display the line to your map using Map Tools > Line path. Make sure your new database and your original map are the active/highlighted ones.

7. Repeat steps 1-6 for as many lines as you need. In the Digitize to XYZ now, you can either create new XYZ files, or append the original one.

8. You will now have a database of lines to which you can assign a projection and then export using the options under Database > Export.
