Error Message: "PlotSection failed because Could not create temporary copy of job: xxx\temp\*_geotemp.ins"
Problem/Symptom:
Error message occurs when attempting to plot a section.
Environment:
This resolution applies Oasis Montaj and Target v7.0, and Target for ArcGIS v3.0.
Resolution:
First, you need to ensure that you are logged onto your computer as an administrator or power user. Second, ensure that you have all rights to read and write to the Geosoft temporary file directory. Browse to C:\Program Files\Geosoft\software package\, and right-click on the "temp" directory. Choose Properties > Security, and make sure you have all the permissions (under Administrators, Power Users, SYSTEM, and Users (if applicable). There are then a couple of options to resolve this.
Option 1)
- Open the program.
- Go to GX > Global Settings > General (Oasis Montaj and Target), or Geosoft Setup > Settings (Target for ArcGIS).
- Click Next once.
- In the More Settings box you will find the option for the Temporary file directory.
- Using the Browse button, set the Temp directory to be either C:\Program Files\Geosoft\Oasis Montaj\temp, C:\Program Files\Geosoft\Target\temp, or C:\Program Files\Geosoft\ArcGIS\temp.
- Click Next and Finish.
- Save the current Geosoft Project (Oasis Montaj and Target), or the current MXD (in ArcGIS), and close and re-start the software application.
- If this fails, go back into the Global General Settings, and do not browse for the Temp directory location. Rather, manually add the location by typing in C:\Program Files\Geosoft\software package\temp.
Option 2)
- Close down Geosoft.
- Browse to C:\Program Files\Geosoft\software package\user\ini.
- Delete the following files: defaultsettings.sbf, defaultsettings.sbf.old (if it exists), geosettings.meta, and geosettings.meta.old (if it exists).
- Re-open Geosoft and you should no longer experience the issue. To double-check, open the Global General Settings and check that the temp directory is now in the correct spot.
Option 3)
- Create a new folder somewhere on your C drive. For example, call it C:\Geosoft_Temp\temp.
- In the 'More Settings' dialog box, browse for this location and set the temporary file directory to be at this location.
- Save, close, and re-start the software application.
Option 4)
- With Geosoft closed, open MSDOS Command Line (Start > Run > cmd).
- Type in the following:
Cd c:\program files\geosoft\software package\bin
Echo %temp%
And see if this resolves the issue.
Option 5)
Repair the installation using Control Panels > Add/Remove Programs.
If you are having difficulties moving the temp directory using Options 1, 2, 3, or 4, it is suggested that you repair the installation.
Note: For Windows Vista you need to turn off User Account Control in the User Account Control Panel. Then, use Add/Remove Programs to repair the installation.
Root Cause:
This error can occur if a user doesn't have the correct administrative or power user rights on the computer. It can also occur if the Temp directory isn't correctly set.
That being said, you may have all user rights and the temp directory in the correct place, and can still see the problem. This is a known bug that Geosoft is working to fix for v7.0.1.
