How To: Create a geochemical triplot or scatter analysis template and overlay

|

Problem/Symptom:
I notice in the triplot and scatter analysis tools that I can create a geochemical template and overlay for future use. How is this possible and what are the steps required to do so?

Environment:
This resolution applies to the Geochemistry extension for Oasis Montaj or Target, version 7.0. This resolution can also be applied to older versions.

Resolution:

1) Using triplot analysis, pick three data value channels (you can also use expressions to combine channels, e.g. Ni + Cu). For scatter plot analysis, choose two data value channels (or expressions).

2) In the template box, type in a name for the template. This must start with Triplot_ for a triplot, or XY_ for a scatter plot.

3) Save the template. This triplot_elements.geosoft_template (or XY_elements.geosoft_template) file is automatically placed in the C:\Program Files\Geosoft\Oasis montaj\user\etc folder. All template files must be saved in this \user\etc directory.

4) Plot the triplot or scatter plot by clicking OK, after you have chosen the data, template name, and any other preferences (symbol colour, size, etc).

5) In the triplot or scatter plot tool, plot a new map using the "Plot the triplot/scatter plot to a map" button:

triplot.jpg TRIPLOT

scatter.jpg SCATTER

6) On the new triplot/scatter plot map, go to Geochem Analysis > New Overlap Group. The View is your triplot/scatter plot view (you can check in the View/Group Manager Tool), and you can call the overlay group anything you'd like. Place the new group in the triplot/scatter plot view in this dialog.

7) Edit the overlay group on your map as you see fit, and delete any other groups on the map that you do not want to appear on your overlay map.

8) Then go to Geochem Analysis > Create Overlay. The view is pre-set, and you can choose which overlay group to use. Then, enter a new overlay map name.

9) This creates two main files in your \user\etc directory, called Triplot_elements.geosoft_overlay, and Triplot_elements_overlaygroupname.map (or XY_ for scatter plots).

10) Now you have created the template and overlay files, all of which should be stored in your \user\etc directory. You must leave these files in this directory in order to use them.

11) Now back in the triplot/scatter plot analysis tools you can use the template and overlay you just created.
