How To: Convert a UTM to a Geographic Coordinate System in a Database

|

Problem/Symptom:
I have a database in local projected XY coordinates, and wish to convert it to Lat,Long coordinates.

Environment:
Applies to all versions of Oasis Montaj and Target (as well as Target for ArcGIS). This particular resolution refers to the steps involved in Oasis Montaj and Target v7.0.

Resolution:

1) Open your database.

2) Set your UTM coordinates. Go to Coordinates > Set Projection. Select the X Channel as your X UTM channel and the Y Channel as your Y UTM channel. Click Projection.

3) The Coordinate System dialog box is then shown. Select the coordinate system as Projected (x,y), and then select your current datum, local datum, and projection method. Click OK.

4) Next, go to Coordinates > New Project Coordinates. The Enter Existing Coordinate Channel dialog box is shown. Select your current UTM coordinate channels and click Next.

5) The Coordinate System dialog box is shown. Confirm your current UTM projection (which you set above in Step 3), and click OK. You can also edit the current UTM projection here if need be.

6) The Create New Coordinate Channel dialog box is then shown. Give a name to the two new channels that will be created. (Example: LONG as the X channel; and LAT as the Y channel). Click NEXT.

7) In the next box (Coordinate System) choose Geographic Lat/Long as the coordinate system. Select the datum and local datum transform. Click OK.

8) The new channels (LONG and LAT) in geographic coordinates will be created in your current database.

9) To set these as the current channels, go to Coordinates > Set Current X,Y,Z Coordinates.
