How To: Add a Geosoft grid or other raster to a Geosoft MXD
Symptom/Problem:
How can I add a Geosoft grid or other raster into a Geosoft MXD?
Environment:
This resolution only applies to Oasis Montaj and Target v7.0, and the new ArcGIS-MXD capabilities of this latest version.
Resolution:
There are two ways to add a Geosoft grid into a Geosoft MXD.
Option 1:
Drag and drop any Geosoft grid from an open map by selecting the grid name in the Map View Group Manager tool, and dragging it onto an open MXD; this solution is valid for any Geosoft "map group" - grids, symbols, contours etc. Note that the resulting layer on the MXD is known as a Geosoft "Quickmap" layer, and you cannot adjust or change the appearance of any of the elements in a Quickmap.
Option 2:
Use the [Add Data] button from the MXD window. Click the [Add Data] button in the MXD window. Click the [Rasters] button in the left-hand pane. Select to show files of type "All Files (.*)". The raster files, including the Geosoft grid files will appear as valid file types to add to the MXD. Clicking [Open] will select the highlighted grid file and add it to the MXD.

Additional notes:
A grid that is added to the MXD window in Oasis montaj will use the ESRI defaults for displaying rasters. Any changes to the symbology or other attributes will need to be made in ArcMap. You can adjust the transparency of the raster in the MXD window in Oasis montaj by clicking the [Transparency] button (it looks like a half filled measuring cup) next to the list of layers in the MXD. If the MXD is moved to a computer with ArcMap that does not have the Geosoft Plug-in for ArcGIS or Target for ArcGIS, the grid will not be displayed. To avoid this, you can open the MXD on a computer that does have the Geosoft Plug-in for ArcGIS or Target for ArcGIS, and export the grid layer (right-click the grid file in the table of contents and choose "Export Data" from the context menu. Choose to export the Geosoft grid layer to a different format (IMG, or ESRI Grid Raster file), and then add the new raster back to the MXD.
