How To: Speed up Geosoft performance/processing time when running complex tasks
Problem/Symptom:
Program is taking a long time to perform complex tasks. User would like to allocate more temporary memory to speed up processing.
Environment:
This particular resolution applies to Oasis montaj v7.0 and Target v7.0, but can also be applied to older versions of the software.
Resolution
There are a couple of methods to increase the amount of temporary memory available in Oasis montaj.
1) Increase the Swap File Maximum in the Metadata Tool:
In Oasis, go to GX | Global Settings | Advanced, and scroll down to Memory Settings. The Swap File Maximum is set to 0 by default. When set to 0 the program only uses half of the remaining hard drive space on whichever drive the geotemp directory is located to perform temporary processing.
For example, if you have 4GB of empty space on the C:\ drive (and the temp folder is located on the C:\ drive), then Oasis will only use up to 2048MB. You can increase this Swap File Maximum to something more like 4000MB, or closer to the full amount of available space on that drive. NOTE: you can check the location of your Temp folder by going to GX | Global Settings | General. Press the next button. The Temporary file directory is the last parameter on the dialog window.
2) Empty files stored in the Temporary Folder. This is also the "geotemp" directory, and is located at C:\Program Files\Geosoft\Oasis Montaj (or Target)\temp.
Files that appear in the temporary folder are known as Temporary Processing Files. These are temporary files that are created during processing. Once a process is complete these files are no longer needed, but continue to be stored in the temp folder until the program is exited. Once a project is closed and the program is exited these files should be deleted automatically. However, in some cases the files remain, particularly after an abnormal program exit (abort). These files are safe to delete.
To delete these files close the program and navigate to your C:\Program Files\Geosoft\Oasis montaj (or Target)\temp (or the current location of your temp folder) and delete the contents of this file. This will free up a little more space.
