How To: Combine separate channels into a single array channel

|

Symptom/Problem:
My array data has already been imported into separate channels in a Geosoft database. How can I combine these into a single array channel?

Environment:
This resolutions applies to all versions of Oasis Montaj and Target.

Resolution:
There are two solutions:

Solution 1)
Export your database as an XYZ file, then re-import. During the import process, identify your first column of array data. In the Source Data panel, insert the array size, and in the Output panel specify a suitable name for the array. You can save the XYZ import template (*.i*) to easily import multiple files of array data that are similarly formatted.

Solution 2)
To avoid re-importing the data (only suitable for small array sizes):
1. Assuming the data is arranged in arbitrary channels named Z0, Z1...Z9 etc.
2. Create a new channel named Z, enter the number of array element channels you have (here = 10). (Enter this in the Array Size box in the Create Channel dialog).
3. You will end up with a blank array channel.
4. Type in Z[0] to a new channel name, adjacent to your new array channel. The array size for these channels are 1.
5. Triple click on the channel header cell of Z[0], and type =, and then enter Z0 in the database formula box (your first element channel Z0 corresponds to the new virtual channel Z[0] that you just created), press Enter. Here, you are copying the data from the original Z0 channel and placing it in the virtual Z[0] channel. Data from Z[#] channels are automatically incorporated into the existing array channel.
6. The Z[0] channel should now be populated with the data from Z0.
7. Repeat for Z1, Z2, etc channels...you will notice the array channel Z is starting to build with the array elements
8. Continue this process until you have completed Z[9] = Z9.
9. Z will now be populated with your array data.

Once Array data is correctly entered into the database the user can use the Database Tools > Array Channels GX tools (this is the v7.0 menu location).
