Geosoft mapping software for geophysics, geology, geochemistry

Geosoft is taking forever to launch and databases take forever to load.

|

Symptom/Problem:
Geosoft is taking forever to launch and databases take forever to load. Windows is backing up the database for some reason.

Environment:
Applicable to all Geosoft products (except Target for ArcGIS) and all versions. Generally occurs when there are medium to large size databases loaded into a Geosoft project.

Resolution:

  1. Close the program.

  2. Go to C:\Program Files\Geosoft\Oasis Montaj\bin.

  3. Look for a file called georestore.exe. This EXE is also shipped in the Extra Installs directory of your Geosoft CD.

  4. Double-click this EXE to run the fix.

You may then possibly come upon an error message ("Exception removing GDB from C:\Windows\system32\restore\filelist.xml....."). You can ignore this message.

You will then see a successful message: "The GDB extension has been successfully excluded from your System Restore list".

Your Geosoft projects and databases will now load fine.

Note - the georestore.exe is shipped with all versions post-v6.3. If you have v6.2 or older you may not have this file. If you do not have it, contact technical support for a copy.

Root Cause:
Windows System Restore has a file extension called GDB. Occassionally, Geosoft GDBs and Windows GDBs will conflict during certain periods or during system restores. Running the georestore.exe removes the GDB file extension from the Windows System Restore list.
