About this Release

Oasis montaj 8.1 is a scheduled software upgrade available to all maintained customers. This release includes new features that enhance the process of digitizing and editing geological interpretations. Add, edit, or delete geostring vertices. Customize geostring polygons and polylines with new pattern fills and line styles. There are a number of new snapping options, including the ability to snap to existing interpretations and to snap on or off a section in edit mode.

This release includes significant upgrades to the Oasis montaj Induced Polarisation and GM-SYS 3D extensions. The new Induced Polarisation features include a new quality control tool that links your data views in real-time, the ability to plot IP pseudo-sections as colour coded symbols in a 3D view, and enhancements that streamline your workflow. GM-SYS 3D includes new options for displaying and colouring layers, the ability to create models from partial datasets, identify potential crossings when editing and better control over calculations. MAGMAP has an improved Reduction-to-the-pole (RTP) workflow.

Oasis montaj 8.1 runs on Windows 8 (32 and 64 bit), Windows 7 (recommended) (32 and 64 bit) , Windows XP SP3 (32 bit), or Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit) operating systems.

Ease of Use

Control vertical extents of fence diagram

You can control the vertical extents of a fence diagram in sections by selecting the depth range. This enables you to plot the part of the hole you want to see instead of having to plot the entire hole.

New Feature

Survey design tool

Use the Survey Design Tool to quickly design a simple survey for ground geophysics or geochemical sampling. Plan a new survey by defining survey extents, line direction and spacing, sample spacing, and QA/QC samples. Use the reporting tools to calculate total line distance or number of samples, export a list for sample collection and preparation, or plot a map of the lines and samples.

Added Generalized Derivative grid filter

We have added a new generalized derivative filter option which can be useful for bringing out small details obscured by larger amplitude anomalies normally to the general geological structure. The generalized derivative is similar to the horizontal derivative filter, with the additional benefit that the angle of the filter is specified in 3D, through an Azimuth and a Dip angle. The curvature of the potential field response is a useful attribute that is used to enhance the signal along a specified 3D direction.

Esri ArcEngine 10.2

During installation, if you have a ArcEngine 10.1 or earlier installed or if you have no ESRI Desktop products installed, you will be prompted with the option to install ArcEngine 10.2.

3D Visualization

Added 3D path drawing to the 3D Viewer

If the X,Y,Z coordinates are identified in the database, you can plot a 3D trace of the survey path in the 3D viewer. This is particularly useful for an airborne survey over rugged terrain, enabling you to closely inspect the intersections or trajectory deviations.

Calculate a 3D distance

If your dataset has X,Y and Z coordinates set, you now have the option of calculating a 3D distance channel using the Z values (“slope chain” or “break chain” survey method). The 3D distance calculation reflects the true distance between recording points. In addition, you can also set the increasing direction of the distance along either the survey direction or the coordinate system axis. This new method is an option, the default is to use the existing distance channel tool, which calculates the horizontal distance using only X and Y coordinates.

Close a geostring

You can now close a geostring so it is not displayed on any of your maps.

Edit geostring vertices

Add, edit, or delete geostring vertices, including the ability to snap on or off section in edit mode.

Pattern Fill for Geostrings

Select a pattern fill from the Geosoft Pattern library for a geostring polygon or polyline.

Print maps with geostrings

Geostrings are now displayed on printed maps.

Snap to an existing interpretation

You can now snap to existing interpretations in an open geostring file while digitizing.

Snapping to To or From of a single from-to interval

Improved snapping options enable you to snap to either the To or From values (top or bottom of intervals), and individual intervals that are not connected to another from-to value.

Data Management

Increase the speed of voxel direct gridding

We optimized direct gridding to greatly improve the speed, enabling you to save time when gridding high volume 3D data such as GPR or lidar.

GM-SYS 3D

Clipping, transparency, and colour tool for model layers

New display options allow you more control and flexibility when viewing a model in 3D. An Attributes tab has been added for each layer which allows you to control clipping, access the colour tool, and change the transparency for the layer relief surfaces of the model in the 3D view.

Control vertical sampling in 3D model

Added the ability to set the top vertical sample spacing, the factor by which the spacing increases downward, and the depth at which the expansion factor starts to be used. This enables you to improve resolution of calculations, or reduce the calculation time if high-resolution isn't required.

Layer Export options

You can now export any property of a layer to any format that can accurately represent that information. There are new layer export options and all of the options are accessible from a single dialog box. When you select a layer and property to export, the dialog provides intelligent output options.

Reduced restrictions on data coverage for model inputs

You can now use partial datasets with as little as 25% coverage in your model, which allows explorers to use more of their data without restriction.

Set and change colour tables used to display layers

You now have more flexibility and control over colour mapping in the 3D viewer. Set and change the colour mapping for displaying layer relief surfaces in 3D. The full colour range may be applied to each layer or the entire model. These settings override separate colour mappings for each layer.

Toggle layer display

Added the ability to toggle visibility of each model layer, enabling you to display only the layers you want to see.

GM-SYS Profile

Profile model extraction from 3D captures more model details

Extract a profile model from a 3D model captures more block information and automatically saves horizon information from the 3D source model, making it more efficient when extracting Profile models to investigate the 3D models.

Induced Polarization

Improved the Induced Polarization (IP) Quality Control tool

You have more visibility into and flexibility with the overall data when using the new IP (Induced Polarization) QC tool, as a result you can proceed more confidently with your edits. The QC (quality control) tool has a live dynamic link to the IP database and the pseudosection plots. While running the QC tool you can scroll, zoom and relocate the linked pseudosection and IP database. Furthermore, while inspecting your data you can update the pseudosection and database from within the QC tool. If you have made changes to the database while performing quality control procedures, you can pull the data and see the changes. Finally, all duplicates of the row you are inspecting are extracted and tabulated for your further convenience.

Identify a database as an IP database

You no longer are constrained to import your IP data through the IP workflow to be able to use the IP tools. When you specify a database, it is validated to ensure that it has all the necessary components to be treated as an IP database. If any information is missing, you are prompted to enter it.

Added Geo-referencing for IP database

Normally the IP data is collected on a local coordinate system. This tool allows you to geo-locate the IP data any time through your workflow. After performing quality control on your IP data, rather than be bound to complete your interpretation in isolation, you can now display it in a geo-referenced 3D view along with your other data.

Added support for UBC V5 format in IP workflow

You can now export to UBC V5 IP format. The updated UBC inversion requires more parameters, as a result UBC updated the IP data format to V5. For your convenience and to facilitate your use of the updated UBC inversion we now export to both the old (V3) and new (V5) UBC IP data formats through the same interface.

Display or edit IP time|frequency windows

Upon import, the IP time|frequency windows are saved in the array registry of the IP database. You can also update the time|frequency windows of a historic IP database.

3D pseudosection plot

Plot an IP pseudosection using colour-coded symbols in a 3D view. This enables you to easily view the georeferenced pseudosection in the 3D view along with other layers.

IP menu updates

With the updates to the IP extension, we took the opportunity to better organize the menu in a more natural and efficient workflow.

MAGMAP

Improved MAGMAP Reduction-to-the-pole (RTP) workflow

When building the Reduction-to-Pole (RTP) filters, you can now calculate the Inclination and Declination automatically just by clicking a calculator button. IGRF parameters are also calculated on-the-fly.

Build a model constraint

The existing Upper/lower bound constraint builder has been renamed to Build a model to emphasize that you can build not just upper or lower bound constrained models but also any type of constrained, starting or reference model as well.
