Top New Features
We've made a number of tasks more intuitive, and easier to complete, through improvements in workflow and removal of known bottlenecks to efficiency. These include: multiple view shadow cursors, map and grid relative paths, multiple channel gridding, extended group name limit, array channel utilities and metadata improvements.
To address the challenges inherent in organizing, finding and accessing the increasing volumes of data used for earth exploration projects we have created a single data access tool called Seeker, to simplify data search and retrieval. We've also expanded our support of ODBC, JPEG 2000 and other formats.
Effective 3D rendering of the subsurface is essential for presentation and collaboration, however a great deal of work is still completed on plans and sections. Moving naturally between 2D and 3D is critical, and making this transition more seamless is a key focus in this release.
The advances include the ability to sample a voxel to GDB locations, orient GOCAD voxet files, use log and log/linear options for 3D gridding, and new utilities to create uniform voxels and grids of any size.
This release contains many new features and enhancements in the Oasis montaj extensions and montaj Plus extensions from our software partners. Some of the highlights include:
- Geophysics: Display curved or crooked sections in 2D or 3D views
- MAGMAP: New Multistep Expansion algorithm
- Geochemistry: New duplicate sample identification method
- Drillhole: Significant Intersection Report
- GM-SYS: Enhanced Block Spreadsheet and Velocity/Density conversion
- GM-SYS 3D: New menus and calculation utilities
- SEG-Y Reader: Improved XML Configuration
- CET Grid Analysis: A new extension that provides automated lineament detection of gridded data
Ease of Use Improvements
Geosoft dynamic linking of data between maps and Geosoft databases has always been a valued capability.
Now we have taken this feature and made it better by adding shadow cursor support to all data views within a map. Use the shadow cursor to link multiple data views or a section view and a plan view in the same map.
Dynamic linking with the shadow cursor includes scatter plots and triplots, plan maps, section maps, and 3D Viewers. A toggle in the Advanced Parameters also allows the user to turn off this functionality. Shadow cursors now also work across different Geosoft Project Files (GPF).
Map / Grid Relative Paths
We have improved the handling of relative paths for rasters in maps to make opening maps more efficient. When opening a map where the grids have been moved from their original file locations, the path to the grids are now stored relatively so that they will be discovered automatically. When manual input of the file location is required, the map will find other rasters in the same location, so you will only be prompted to find the first grid when there are many grids displayed on the map.
Multiple Channel Gridding
We have added a Multiple Channel Gridding capability to provide an efficient way to create grids for many channels. This is available for Minimum Curvature or Bi-Directional Line Gridding algorithms and the same parameters are applied to all selected channels. This utility is very useful when making grids from multi-element geochemical data, or with multichannel array data such as EM.
Menu Updates
Math, Math Expression, and Load All Channels GXs have been added to the Scripting submenu, making it easier to access these items. Load All Channels is used to display new channels created within a script. The Math and Math Expression functions are an alternative to the Channel Math tool and are recorded in detail when scripting, making it easier to edit in the script file.
Map Group Names
We have improved map group names in the Map View/Group Manager. The character limit for group names has been extended to 1024 characters. This is useful when identifying groups in maps with longer descriptive names and distinguishing between groups with very similar names.
Array Channel Utilities
We have improved our ability to transfer channels to and from arrays using two new selection tools. "Array to Database Channels" can be used to quickly display selected elements from an array as individual channels. It is now very easy to create a new array from a selection of existing channels in a database using "Database Channels to Array".
Metadata Improvements
Metadata Lineage records how Geosoft document files are created. Database lineage has been streamlined to only record database creation tasks. Database processing tasks are not recorded in the metadata. A scriptable option has been added to better manage the creation of metadata updates when using scripts.

Improved Data Access
Seeker
 Geosoft Seeker Video
See how to use Seeker to find data in your Geosoft application or plug-in.
Seeker simplifies the data search and retrieval process from DAP Servers and other online data sources. Seeker replaces our two 'Find Data' options with a workflow-driven design.
Seeker's design combines capabilities and concepts from DAP Find Data and Dapple interfaces to create a straightforward 3-step workflow.
Search criteria, including Structured Metadata Queries, are used to refine the result set and provide access to relevant metadata. The search results are easy to review, and selected datasets are simple to retrieve and use in your local mapping environment. The Seeker data access tool is available in all Geosoft applications and plugins.
ODBC Import with Filters
A new filtering capability has been added to our ODBC tools, both for accessing drill hole databases or surface data. Now you can access just the data that you need without the requirement for SQL query knowledge for both surface data GDBs and Target drill hole projects. This new capability will also allow you to connect to other drill hole databases such as DataShed and Century systems.
JPEG 2000 Support
We have added support for JPEG 2000 (JP2 and J2K file extensions). Display options are available through the grid & image tools, and conversion to the JPEG 2000 can be found under the Map Export formats. Similar to the GeoTIFF format, JPEG 2000 supports embedded coordinate system information. In addition, JPEG 2000 also supports transparency which is very useful when sharing images of grids that are not simple rectangular in shape.
ASEG-GDF2
The ASEG import has been updated to support the ASEG-GDF2 format. The ASEG document describing the format introduces an additional user readable self-defining text file. This file contains information regarding the data collection, such as geographic coordinate system and location, and the physical significance of each of the channels. This information is imported and can be viewed in the metadata under Abstract. Upon export the description information, if present, is saved into a text file.
Excel 2007
Added support for Excel 2007 (*.xlsx) files.
RMS DAARC 500 import
RMS Instruments offers a number of Aeromagnetic Compensation data acquisition systems, each recording the data in its own documented native format. The most recent RMS instrument, the RMS DARRC-500, is gaining popularity with the airborne survey companies, and in Oasis montaj 7.2 Geosoft added it to the supported list of database import formats. This import prompts the user for the instrument settings, and proceeds with importing/merging the binary files one at a time into an Oasis montaj database.

3D Subsurface Improvements
Voxel Colour Bar Button
We have added an option to display a Colour Legend Bar for voxels to the layout of a 3D view.
GOCAD Voxet orientation support
Orientation of GOCAD Voxet files can be specified in several ways. The GOCAD Voxet conversion to Geosoft Voxel has been expanded in this release to fully support the orientation parameters. This ensures that voxets are correctly oriented and located in the Geosoft 3D Viewer.
Sample a Voxel to GDB locations
The new Sample a Voxel capability allows you to query the values in a Geosoft voxel using a Geosoft databases with X, Y, Z coordinates. All voxels, including lithology voxels, can be sampled. This capability is useful in data verification to compare original database values to interpolated voxel values, or can be used to add a new channel containing voxel values to a database that contains a different data type (e.g. Geochemical voxel values to Lithology table).
Log and Log/Linear options for 3D Gridding
We have added new options to the 3D Gridding tool. You can now use Log and Log/Linear interpolation when creating voxels. Using the logarithm of the original values can be a very effective way to reduce distortion in highly skewed data, such as geochemical assays.
Master Voxel
The Master Voxel utility allows you to create a uniform voxel of any size, orientation, and coordinate system. A Master Voxel can define the dimensions of the resulting voxel when resampling and completing voxel math operations.
Master Grid
The Master Grid utility lets you create a uniform grid of any size and coordinate system for Grid and Voxel Math operations. A Master Grid may also be used in GMSYS-3D for creating the Index Grid that defines the model.

Updates for Oasis montaj software extensions
Geophysical Sections
 Geophysical Sections
Watch this video to see how to create sections from curved or crooked survey lines.
We have added new support for sections to our montaj Geophysics extension. Explorers can now create sections from survey lines that contain bends or curves. You can display these curved or crooked sections in 2D or 3D views as either grids or pixel plots. This new section support provides accurate geospatial representation by ensuring that data are correctly positioned along the survey line. These sections support full data linking between all displays of the data including: plan maps, sections and 3D views. For more information, see the support section for a list of answers to common questions about creating sections.
Sample a Voxel to GDB locations
The new Sample a Voxel capability allows you to query the values in a Geosoft voxel using a Geosoft databases with X, Y, Z coordinates in points or arrays. This capability is useful in sampling a voxel to an existing survey line, or can be used to add a new channel containing voxel values to a database that contains a different data type (e.g. combining data from different inversion models).
1D-FFT Filtering: Constrained Linear Prediction (CLP) expansion option
We have added a Constrained Linear Prediction (CLP) extrapolation method to our 1D-FFT expansion routine. It is useful in minimizing edge effects when working with data containing systematic high frequency interference.
Find out more: How the Constrained Linear Prediction method works
To perform FFT filtering the data must be periodic and free of dummies. To ensure this requirement, the Maximum Entropy Prediction (MEP) method has been the default extrapolation method. After filtering, the data is masked back to its original coverage.
Maximum Entropy Prediction calculates a series of coefficients based on adjacent segments of real data, then uses these coefficients to recursively extrapolate the data. MEP performs very well for data of geophysical nature. In the occasional situation where the data is collected near a high power source, or in the vicinity of a propeller in operation, it becomes contaminated with systematic high frequency interference. When processing such data, the user may observe edge effects. The edge effect is not due to the filtering process but rather to the extrapolation method used.
To resolve this specific artifact, Geosoft has introduced the Constrained Linear Prediction (CLP) extrapolation method in Oasis montaj version 7.2. Like Maximum Entropy Prediction, Constrained Linear Prediction calculates a series of coefficients based on adjacent segments of real data, the Linear Prediction algorithm then uses these coefficients to recursively extrapolate the data. The critical difference is that in order to ensure the integrity of the data and control offshoots, the Linear Prediction coefficients are constrained to account for the systematic short wavelengths in the data. This very constrain causes a stabilizing effect.

New Duplicate Sample Identification Method
Duplicate sample identification has been simplified and improved. The Duplicate indicator column now contains the original sample number of the parent sample. This enables you to have multiple duplicates that reference a single parent sample.
Log options for Box plots
Box plot graphs have been improved with the addition of a new option for plotting a logarithmic scale.
top
Length Weighted Mean Calculation
Length Weighted Mean calculations have been added to the statistics tools. By highlighting a selected section of your drillhole database, you can now calculate Length and Length Weighted Mean values. This makes it easy to quickly find out the length of several irregularly spaced samples as well as the length weighted mean assay value.
Significant Intersections Report
Significant Intersections Reporting is a new option added to the Drillhole Database Composite tool (under the DH-Data menu).
This tool enables geologists to quickly identify drill core intervals that have significant assays based on minimum cut-off length and grade. This is useful for highlighting successful drilling results visually within sections, maps or 3D views, and is exportable as a tabular report.
Real world coordinates in Fence Diagrams
In Fence Diagrams, we now support true geospatial positioning. The status bar reports the correct 3D location of the cursor position when moving within the fence section, and the dynamic linking from Fence Diagrams now works consistently with other map views. top
Additional Gridfill option: Multi-step Expansion algorithm
We have added a Multistep Expansion (MSE) algorithm option to our Gridfill routine.
It is useful in minimizing artifacts when working with grids that have jagged edges and short wavelength features.
The MSE filled area also has a more natural look and is truer to the power spectra of the original data.
Find out more: How the muti-step algorithm works
The MAGMAP process requires the gridded data to be periodic and free of dummies. Traditionally MAGMAP offered two extrapolation methods to ensure this requirement; Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW)and Maximum Entropy Prediction (MEP), the latter being the default method. After filtering, the data is masked back to its original coverage, IDW skirts the grid with values rapidly decreasing to the background. MEP calculates a series of coefficients based on adjacent real segments, then uses these coefficients to recursively extrapolate the data. MEP performs well for most grids of geophysical nature by extrapolating the gridded data on a row by row basis.
This is done independently for each cardinal direction. For this very reason, in the odd case, where the edge of the grid is very jagged, and is laced with short wavelength features, the power spectrum may suffer of high frequency bias/contamination, resulting in edge effects. The artefact may spill some distance into the grid.
To address this artefact in Oasis montaj 7.2 the Multistep Expansion (MSE) algorithm has been introduced. Using MSE the filled area has a more natural look and is truer to the power spectra of the original data, while still conforming to all the FFT requirements. MSE first adds a smooth buffer ribbon around the edge of the grid, then fills all dummy islands and inlets by mirror imaging the adjacent real data, mimicking periodicity it proceeds to fill the smallest bounding rectangle of the real data calling upon the minimum curvature algorithm, and finally extrapolates the grid to the extended FFT dimension using the Linear Prediction algorithm. This method takes longer that the MEP method, thus the MEP remains the default method.

Velocity/Density conversion
This new capability enables the easy conversion between density and velocity allowing you to select from ten of the most commonly-used, published relationships. Seismic interpreters commonly provide velocity models to potential-field professionals as an exchange format. Velocity information is not directly useful in modelling, but must be converted to density using known relationships between the parameters.
Updated User Interface
The user-interface has been rewritten to improve workflow, extensibility, and efficiency. The new interface is comfortably familiar with a new look-and-feel: new icons and cleaner organization for the toolbars and the floating Action toolbar is now dockable.
Access IGRFPT.GX
IGRFPT.GX calculates the Geomagnetic Reference Field for a specific location and date. This information is required to calculate the magnetic response of a model. IGRFPT.GX replaces the functionality previously provided by the NGRF.exe utility. The upgraded IGRFPT.GX is a more robust implementation and is now easily accessible from the GM-SYS Profile menu.
Enhanced Block Spreadsheet
We've added new functionality to the Block Spreadsheet making it easier to do quality control of your model. You can sort the spreadsheet by any block parameter (e.g. Block Name or density), making it much easier to compare the properties of a block. Improved cut/paste functionality means you can also copy one or more properties from a block and paste those properties into any other block(s).
top
Draped surface FFT gravity calculations
We've removed the limitation that required upward-continuation of your data to a constant elevation. GM-SYS 3D will now calculate the gravity response of a model on a draped surface, typically topography. This new capability allows you to build a more accurate and detailed model.
Menu changes
To improve your workflow the GM-SYS 3D menu has been reorganized into two separate menus.
- GM-SYS 3D: contains model creation and basic model manipulation including open/close/export functionality.
- GM-SYS 3D Tools: contains the editing, display, and calculation capabilities.
Space-domain vertical prism calculation utilities (Gbox and MBox)
This new utility allows you to perform forward calculations for simple vertical prisms. This in an implementation of Blakely's GBox (Gravity) and MBox (Magnetic) forward calculations useful for testing simple theoretical models.
Improved XML Configuration
SEG-Y Reader now saves the configuration data in Geosoft-standard XML Metadata format allowing the SEG-Y Reader to automatically recognize the file format and load it. Making it faster and easier to work with SEG-Y files.

Oasis montaj Plus Extensions
The CET (Centre for Exploration Targeting) Grid Analysis extension for Oasis montaj consists of a number of tools that provide automated lineament detection of gridded data, which can be used for first-pass data processing.
As explorers often have large volumes of gridded data to interpret, these tools provide a rapid unbiased workflow that reduces the time with which one can interpret gridded data.
The CET Grid Analysis extension contains tools for texture analysis, phase analysis, and structure detection. These are versatile algorithms useful for grid texture analysis, lineament detection, edge detection, and thresholding.
The extension is specifically designed for mineral exploration geophysicists and geologists looking for discontinuities within magnetic and gravity data. The CET Grid Analysis provides a step-by-step trend detection menu which offers two different approaches to trend estimation. The first method, Texture analysis-based image enhancement, is suitable for analyzing regions of subdued magnetic or gravity responses where texture analysis can first enhance the local data contrast. The second method, Discontinuity structure detection, is useful in identifying linear discontinuities and edge detection.
