Chimera Advances

Coloured channels: Individual numeric values in a channel can now be coloured based on value. Use the "Set channel colours..." command on the right-mouse channel menu to bring up the "Define colour zones" tool. Up to eight colour zones can be defined, using Linear, Log, Equal-Area or Normal distributions, or based on user-input values. The colours carry through into the Histogram tool, and histogram plots made from that tool onto a map are also coloured.

Gravity Advances

CG5 Import: The GRLOAD.GX now imports ".txt" files from the new Scintrex CG-5 instrument. This instrument produces several different files with different formats. Consult the documentation in the GRLOAD.GX to see the format supported.

Interactiv-IP Advances

QC Tool: Values in the QC Tool can now be grouped by Tx location, as well as by Station. This allows for easier isolation of problems connected to the transmitter location.

Colour Legend Bars: Colour legend bars can now be automatically added to the pseudo-section plots.

Map Name Tag: Pseudo-section maps can now be created with an optional map tag name.

UX-Detect Advances

Deleting multiple targets: It is now possible to delete several individually selected targets off of a map at one time. The UXREMOVE.GX has been modified to do this. In addition, the new UXREMOVE2.GX can be used to delete lassoed multiple targets and remove them in one step.

Wholeplot advances

Database Compositing Tool: A new database compositing tool has been added for v5.1.7. Data from a specified database in a Wholeplot project can be composited to a new database. A wide range of compositing options is available, including compositing to a fixed interval, to intervals taken from lithology, "best-fit" intervals to lithology (combining the first two choices), and intervals taken from a file. Output data can be filtered based on the interval length, gaps in the data as well as on minimum and/or maximum data values in a specified channel. Output values can be weighted using another channel. The output database is automatically available inside the Wholeplot project as a new "Assay" database. The database compositing tool is found on the DH_Data menu under "Composite database..." (DHCOMPOSITEDB.GX).

Stacked Section Plot: Plot multiple Wholeplot sections to the same map. The same tools for defining multiple sections to individual maps are now available to plot the same sections to a single map. This tool is very similar to the current Section tool, but replaces the optional Plan Map and Grid Profile windows with multiple, parallel section plots. The Stacked Section tool is found on the DH_Plot menu under "Stacked section..." (DHSECTSTACK.GX).

Projection Handling: The use of projections has been introduced throughout Wholeplot for v5.1.7.. The projection defined for the Collar Table is used for each component database, and can be set/modified using the new "Set Projection..." (DHSETIPJ.GX) item on the DH_Data menu. Holes from a Wholeplot project set up in one projection can be correctly plotted to a plan map in another projection, for instance.

Structural Ticks: The ability to display structure down boreholes was introduced in v5.1.6, but was restricted to the use of absolute dip and dip-direction measurements. In v5.1.7 measurements made in the hole itself are supported; angles commonly referred to as Alpha and Beta, measured with respect to a reference mark (top or bottom reference) on the casing, and to the hole axis. In the 3D plot, the plotted "disk" can now be plotted as a clear circle with a radial line indicating the down-dip direction.

Grid Profiles: The number of profiles (extracted from grids), which can be plotted with the section plot, has been increased from 3 to 8. In addition, the number of user-definable plotting parameters for the individual profiles has been increased.

Convert Old Wholeplot Databases: By request, v5.1.7 introduces a new tool to convert an old-style Wholeplot database into a "new-style" multi-database Wholeplot project. This new tool is found on the DH_Data menu under "Convert to project" (DHCONVERT.GX).

3D Patterns Optimized: As promised in the v5.1.6 release notes, the rendering of patterns for data plotted down the holes in 3D plots has been optimized in v5.1.7. Users will note a significant improvement in speed.

Miscellaneous Advances

View scaling: The new XDATA.GX, found on the Coordinates menu under "Set view X and Y scaling...", allows you to edit/modify the X and Y scaling independently in a map view.

Database profiles: A new option "Same scale for all profiles in panel" has been added to the right-mouse menu under "Panel Options". This lets you display all profiles to the same scale, but with the individual ranges centred in the window.

Grid math: Performing mathematical operations with grids now works using grids with different cell sizes, origins, even projections. The output grid matches the parameters found in the first specified grid. This applies to the GXs found under "Expressions..." on the "Grid" menu (GRIDADD.GX, GRIDCALC.GX, GRIDMULT.GX, GRIDRAT.GX, GRIDSUB.GX).

Merging multiple databases: The DBMERGE GX has been upgraded to handle multiple databases. A multiple-file selection GUI is used to specify the databases to be merged into the master database.

MapInfo export: The export to MapInfo TAB now saves the "Z" values of contours to the tab file. The values are stored in the "ImpliedZ" field. EXPORTMI.GX.

Set default input and output grid types: The SETTINGS GX has been modified to give options for input and output default grid types. You can now select (for instance) 'Surfer (*.GRD)' as your default input grid type, and Geosoft Comp FLOAT (*.grd) as your default output type. Previously, both input and output grid types were specified using the same parameter.

Contour labels coloured: Optionally, contour labels can now be made the same colour as the contour lines. Previously, it was possible to plot contour lines with different colours, but the labels were always black. CONTOUR.GX and SCONT32.GX.

Target picking: Values from up to four channels can now be written to the "Targets" group. Specify the channels by selecting "Target selection options..." from the right-mouse menu in the database profile window.

GM-SYS upgrade

GM-SYS from Northwest Geophysical Associates (NGA), provides an easy-to-use interface for interactively creating and manipulating models to fit observed gravity and/or magnetic data. This release includes the following upgrades; expanded Well support (Y-coordinate support for Wells, Well symbols, and LAS Well file import), enhanced printing (vector patterns, improved bitmap resolution, A1 enhancements to postscript printing), and improved links with Geosoft’s Oasis montaj (extract profiles from grids of different projections and specifications, and extract magnetic and/or gravity data from grids to an existing model).

New! Extended Euler – Depth To Basement Tool

The new Extended Euler - Depth to Basement Tool, from Northwest Geophysical Associates (NGA), computes extended Euler depth solutions from magnetic (or gravity) profiles. Extended Euler applies GETECH’s implementation of the method by Mushayandebvu and others (2001).

CONTOUR: Grid will not generate contours. Fix: The scaling of this grid was far different than normally encountered, and it revealed a bug in the grid scaling code that normally was suppressed by the nature of the 'normal' scaling.

Part 1: Error when attaching a WRP to an image (JPG) file: This filename.jpg (IMG;t=jpg) image is being displayed using plug-in technology that does not support reprojection: The error message is a little cryptic, but sums up the current state. We use a plug-in technology to display certain image types such as TIF and JPGs, and cannot warp a TIF or JPG like other grid images, beyond scaling in X and Y and locations, which are stored in an external GI file. If a complicated warp is required, it is recommended that the image be windowed, then copied to a geosoft grid.

Part 2: GRIDSTAT.GX: Get the error: 'Cannot open:."Filename.jpg" In write mode. This is a read only DAT.  The GX should have been opening up the grid using IMG_READORWRITE, not IMG_READWRITE. The error message no longer occurs, and you can add a projection, origin change or cell size change to TIF and JPG files without getting an error - it just updates the GI file.

CONTOUR: Why do the contours not cover the entire map? Display the grid using (PIXEL=1) and you can see that contour seems to have a bug... it goes outside the bottom and left edges, but stops 1.5 pixels short of the top and right bounds. The contouring itself is not shifted or offset... it just seems the bounds are calculated wrongly. Regridding to a small cell size does seem to solve the problem...and all contour lines extend to the exact bounds (center of the outside grid pixels). Answer: The problem occurred because the grid dX was not the same as the dY, and so an internal projection is being set up to provide the contouring program with even spacings. The procedure, which inherits projections, expands the grid slightly. The reprojection has been modified, so only if the dX and dY differ from each other by more than 5% will reprojection occur. This solves the problem in this case, but it could still occur for small grids (less than about 100 cells in X and Y) with dX and dY with larger differences...

When displaying the horizontal grid lines on a panel of a GDB profile, the lines do not appear in certain cases: Fix: The drawing code wouldn't plot any time the interval was less than or equal to 0.01. Changed this to work out the number of horizontal lines, and limited that to 100 lines in profile grid.

5.1.5 SETTINGS.GX. The default grid format in the Oasis Montaj settings will not work for Surfer or Geopack grids. Fix: A new method now loads all the input or output file filters into a LST, and the SETTINGS GX has been modified to give options for input and output default grid types. You can now select 'Surfer (*.GRD)' as your default input grid type, or Geosoft Comp FLOAT (*.grd) as your default output type, for instance. There is a bit of conflict here with the next setting 'Default Geosoft grid element type', but it applies in many cases where the user does not select the output grid....
