QUICK TIPS

Natalie GreenTen Timesavers For Map-Making

by
Natalie Green

Geosoft’s Oasis montaj and Target software provide some great tools and templates for making map making easier. Here are Ten Tips to get you started. If you find these helpful, you can view the full web demos online.

1. Quickly find and use the new template features. We’ve put the option to create a template right in the Mapping menu. You can also use the map template toolbar to add groups like a north arrow and scale bar or new items like dates and various titles.

2. Drag and drop XYZ (an ASCII file with an XYZ extension) into a Geosoft database (GDB). Open Windows Explorer and your database. Then simply find and select the XYZ file you’re looking for in Windows Explorer and drag it into the spreadsheet area of your GDB.

3. View lines in your database. Quickly switch from one line in your database to the next by selecting the line header cell (in the top left corner) and using the Page Up and Page Down keys to go to the next or previous line. Display profiles to see the data graphically as you move from line to line.

4. Drag and drop your grid (GRD) into your current map. Open your Project Explorer (which lists files you’ve accessed) and your map. Select one of th e grids from the Grid list and drag it into your map. The map will zoom to the limits of the grid. If you don’t see what you want, use the F key or the L key to zoom out to the Full map or Last limits.

5. Zoom in and out on anomalies. Hit the B (Box) key to zoom into an anomaly and F (Full) to return to your Full map view.

Boosting web-based support

The survey we sent out with our 20th anniversary bonus draw asked customers where they’d like to see Geosoft invest in service improvements. Of the 594 respondents, the greatest percentage, 39% said they’d like to see us invest in web-based services. Another 34% said they’d like us to invest in more email-based service.

As we plan for 2007, we’ll be looking at ways to enhance our e-service options, such as expanding our online FAQ knowledge base and web-based learning resources. Thanks to everyone who responded to our survey. Your feedback counts!
