Teck Cominco selects Geosoft for Global Exploration IT Solution

Scalable and interoperable software platform improves the availability and integration of geoscientific data for collaborative, exploration decision-making and discovery

March 5, 2007Toronto, Ontario - Teck Cominco Ltd. has selected Geosoft and ESRI as their global exploration IT solution providers. Headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, Teck Cominco is a diversified mining company and world leader in the production of zinc and metallurgical coal. Geosoft and Teck Cominco have entered into an agreement that will enable Teck Cominco to deploy a robust, scalable and seamlessly integrated solution, comprised of Geosoft's data server and application software, ESRI ArcGIS and acQuire technology, across Teck Cominco's global operations.

"This agreement builds on Teck Cominco's company-wide implementation of Geosoft DAP data server technology in 2006," said John Mertl, Executive Director of Geosoft's Global Solutions Group "and it represents a progressive and significant commitment towards establishing a new standard for their exploration IT based on Geosoft technology, ESRI's ArcGIS system and acQuire technology. We're pleased to be partnering with acQuire and ESRI in the delivery of integrated exploration solutions which improve efficiency and productivity at a global level. "

The global agreement establishes a complete, interoperable software platform capable of addressing Teck Cominco's growing exploration data management needs, and supporting more effective collaboration between regional offices and horizontally across their operations, and vertically from exploration to resource calculation and engineering groups.

"We selected Geosoft and ESRI technology because we saw a strong fit with our need to establish a solid data foundation, and company-wide standard for our exploration systems. Having worked with Geosoft for over 15 years, we had confidence in their ability to deliver a global solution" said Bob Holroyd, Director of Global Exploration Technology for Teck Cominco. "As a growing company, we need a robust platform that will support our team-based approach to exploration and scale with our growth, allowing us to share vast amounts of data across our enterprise. The interoperability of all our exploration software platforms is absolutely critical, and ESRI's ArcGIS system together with Geosoft's DAP data server technology, Target and Oasis montaj applications, gives us everything we need within one solution."

Teck Cominco's decision to deploy a global exploration technology solution was based on a company-wide assessment that identified the opportunity to make exploration more efficient by increasing access to the company's large data stores and maximizing its use and value in regional targeting and evaluation of new opportunities. Paul Roberts, Senior Project Geologist with Teck Cominco headed up the review. "When we looked at how we use and extract value from our geochemical, geophysical and geological exploration data, we recognized that technology had revolutionized every aspect of how we collect, analyze and share our data for the purpose of exploration and finding new discoveries. Based on our understanding of how the data fits within our workflow, we see tremendous advantage in having a global solution that makes it possible for us to efficiently manage and direct the flow of data to our geologists when and where needed. We also have projects that span several countries, and having the ability to share data, across our regional operations in a way that is geopolitically seamless is a new capability that supports the development of more opportunities."

"Looking to the future, we have no doubt that this global solution will have an impact on our business," says Holroyd, "It's been said that our next ore body will come from our own exploration files. Having all of our data at our fingertips is the big benefit here. The greater our ability to quickly and efficiently find and integrate that data, the better our potential for success."
