Data meets community with new Geosoft initiatives

Recent Geosoft initiatives promote shared knowledge within the geoscience community

November 23, 2006 – Toronto, Ontario - Geosoft, a leading provider of software solutions for the geosciences, has announced two community initiatives – an online community news site and an open source globe viewer – that promote shared knowledge within the earth science community.

Earth Explorer Online

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Geosoft, the company has published its premier issue of Earth Explorer, a magazine dedicated to geoscience exploration. Now online at http://earthexplorer.geosoft.com, the news magazine provides articles, contests and free software downloads for viewing and mapping earth data. Contributors are Geosoft professionals and geoscientists, actively working in the field, who bring a high level of expertise and insight to the topics discussed.

"In the first issue of Earth Explorer, we showcased solutions and technologies that improve the Data Experience for geoscientists, enhancing their ability to extract knowledge from data, to support successful discovery," says Tim Dobush, CEO, Geosoft Inc. "With over 20 years of experience in supporting surface and subsurface exploration projects in the earth sciences, there is a lot we've learned, and Earth Explorer provides a forum for us to share that knowledge.

"We're also committed to supporting Earth Explorer as an online space, where geoscientists can come together as a community," Dobush says. "Knowledge transfer becomes increasingly important, as exploration projects become more collaborative and sophisticated. Earth Explorer will support ongoing dialogue and information sharing between experienced geoscientists, new explorers and students."

New view on geoscience data with Dapple

In keeping with the company's focus on community, Geosoft released Dapple – an open source globe viewer, derived from NASA World Wind. Viewing data on the globe is a powerful and insightful way to work with spatial data. Dapple harnesses this global viewing ability, to make finding and viewing network-hosted spatial data useful for geoscientists.

Dapple provides a simple, intuitive interface to make earth data discovery and exploration quick and easy. It allows a geoscientist to find and visualize massive quantities of geoscientific data available on the Internet - satellite imagery, remote sensing data, geology maps, geophysical data, and much more. Dapple is purpose-built to support open standards and server technologies like WMS and Geosoft DAP. Because the application is open-source, the earth science community can build on and improve the software, which benefits everyone. You can download and get more information about Dapple at http://dapple.geosoft.com.

"Geosoft's vision is to provide a natural data experience that empowers geoscientists to explore the earth," Dobush says. "Helping geoscientists to access and understand the vast amounts of available geoscientific data is essential to exploration, and Dapple is a powerful tool that supports this objective."
