Geosoft and NGA meet oil and gas industry needs in Oasis montaj GM-SYS extensions

New features include a SEG-Y Reader that integrates seismic data and the capability to load time models and convert them to depth models

May 10, 2006 – Toronto, Ontario-a leading provider of geospatial software for earth sciences industries, and Northwest Geophysical Associates (NGA), a leading provider of gravity and magnetic geophysical software, are pleased to announce new major features and improvements to GM-SYS Profile Modeling and GM-SYS-3D Modeling. Geosoft and NGA license these gravity and magnetic applications as montaj plus™ extensions to Oasis montaj.

Two important new features integrate gravity/magnetic and seismic data, enhancing the potential for successful petroleum discoveries. GM-SYS Version 4.9R2 includes a new SEG-Y Reader which enables geoscientists to integrate seismic data in SEG-Y format with Oasis montaj geospatial data and GM-SYS Profile and GMSYS-3D gravity and magnetic models. Additionally, GM-SYS 3D Version 1.3 now has capabilities to build time-based models and easily convert them to depth models.

New features in GM SYS Profile Modeling Version 4.9R2

Seismic data is commonly stored in the SEG-Y format. Until now, geophysicists had to access the information in SEG-Y files by converting screen captures into BMP files and then manually adding these files to their model. The SEG-Y reader in GM SYS Profile Modeling Advanced Version 4.9R2 can read SEG-Y files, project irregular 2D seismic profiles onto model cross sections, and efficiently export the data into BMP, Geosoft GRD or GDB formats. These profiles are then easily imported as cross sections into GM SYS Profile, GMSYS 3D and Oasis montaj. The SEG-Y Reader may be run stand-alone, called from within GM SYS Profile Modeling Advanced, or started from within Oasis montaj.

Many other features have been added to the latest version of GM SYS Profile Modeling, including horizontal magnetic gradient calculations and a full cross-hair cursor, which extends horizontally and vertically across the model, making it easier to align features of interest. The new version also increases the number horizons that may be imported into a new GM SYS model to 15 and removes the requirement that they be positive down, effectively improving integration from other programs while speeding complex model creation.

New features in GMSYS 3D Version 1.3

Among its many new features, GMSYS-3D Version 1.3 responds to users' requirements for improved efficiency and organization by adding the GMSYS-3D Model Explorer. This modeless tool displays the model in a collapsible tree-structure, allowing you to easily limit the display to relevant information. The Model Explorer remains visible while you work with your model and updates automatically when you change your model.

Multiple additions and improvements address users' need to incorporate seismic reflection data into their 3D models. Users may optionally build a "Time" model using seismically-derived time horizons and velocities, then convert this directly to a "Depth" model. A new "Seismic" tab in the model-editing dialog and "Velocity" tab in the layer-editing dialog allow a seamless integration of seismic data into the existing model structure. Utilizing the SEG-Y Reader, 2D SEG-Y files may be displayed as grids in the 3D View of a model. 3D SEG-Y files may be converted to a 3D grid and displayed in 3D, or used to directly calculate the gravity response.

Several other new features have been added in the new update. Response grids can be upward continued to an irregular surface. Density and susceptibility cross-section grids extracted from GMSYS 3D models now contain 3D orientation information, allowing them to also be loaded directly into 3D views. Users can also export GMSYS-3D models to Geosoft, UBC, or GOCAD voxel files.
