Press ReleaseGeosoft adds SEMplot diamond exploration functionality to its Geochemistry extension softwareGeosoft releases 6.3 software update Highlights of Geosoft's 6.3 software release include easy-to-use template tools for map production, enhanced 3D surface and subsurface visualization tools, and improved data compatibilityMay 4, 2006 – Toronto, Ontario - Geosoft, a leading provider of software solutions for the geoscience industry, announced today the release of new SEMplot (Scanning Electron Microscopy) geochemistry functionality within its Oasis montaj software environment. It is standard practice in diamond exploration to gain critical information about the diamond potential of a region by interpreting the type, abundance and composition of kimberlite indicator minerals. "SEMplot's simple-to-use workflow enables geoscientists to efficiently visualize geochemical data obtained from surface and kimberlite rock samples," said Louis Racic, Geosoft's Industry Product Manager, "thereby, accelerating potential diamond target definition." Rio Tinto Exploration, a world leader in finding, mining and processing the earth's mineral resources, originally developed SEMplot and has used the software within its Geosoft software environment, over the past 5 years, to refine target selection for diamond exploration. With Geosoft's latest software release, SEMplot is now available as part of its Geochemistry extension for Oasis montaj and Target software applications. Andy Lloyd, Rio Tinto Exploration project geologist in South Africa, attributes the power of SEMplot to its ability to take very large volumes of microprobe data; use known, scientific analysis tools such as histogram plots and scatter tools to analyze that data; and then quickly produce spatial maps, graphical maps and plots. "SEMplot allows the data to be displayed in a graphical format, so it can be effectively interpreted," he says. "Its ability to manage data in excess of a million data points, with ease and simplicity, makes it a very powerful tool." Among its features, SEMplot allows geoscientists to efficiently determine mineral identification of grains based on their geochemical stoichiometry. Once they have identified the grain, they can plot it correctly. They can choose to display selected mineral grains on standard published discriminating graphs, or graphs and overlays they have created themselves. They can also interactively select and reclassify the samples. In addition, diamond explorationists can use the software's built-in capabilities to dynamically link between and among samples, maps, graphs and data. This ensures maintenance of the spatial context between grain graphs, databases and maps, and makes anomaly location and target selection quicker and more efficient. "You can click onto a point in a geological map where you have a sample and see how it plots in terms of its mineral chemistry, or look at various geochemical displays and see where they fall on the ground," said Dr. Chris Smith, diamond consultant to Rio Tinto. "I'm not aware of any other commercially-available package that can do that."
