Geosoft releases 6.3 software update

Highlights of Geosoft’s 6.3 software release include easy-to-use template tools for map production, enhanced 3D surface and subsurface visualization tools, and improved data compatibility

May 4, 2006 – Toronto, Ontario - Geosoft, a leading provider of software solutions for the geosciences industry, has released a major 6.3 software update to its industry-standard Oasis montaj mapping and processing system, and its Target exploration geology software.

Geosoft's 6.3 software release focuses on usability, productivity and performance, providing new template tools for map production, significant enhancements to the software’s 3D capabilities, and the addition of Datamine™ format support.

For diamond explorers, Geosoft has also added a SEMplot (Scanning Electron Microscopy) geochemistry workflow to its Geochemistry extension for Oasis montaj and Target. SEMplot allows geoscientists to efficiently discriminate their surface sediment and kimberlite rock samples based on their indicator mineral grain geochemistry.

Simplified map making

The 6.3 release allows customers to use standard and custom templates to streamline and simplify map production.

Using templates, customers can create multiple data views on a single map; use existing standards from a template library or create new template standards. They can interactively create their own customized map templates by defining their own data views, titles, text, logos and background graphics or images. Templates are fully scriptable for power users.

3D enhancements

Geosoft’s 6.3 release includes enhancements to its 3D subsurface visualization tools that enable geoscientists to more quickly display data from surfaces, drill data and voxels models and thereby better visualize their spatial context.

Voxel gridding speed has been increased by a factor of five.  Voxel manipulation enhancements include the addition of voxel math support and a Voxel-Grid Clipper. This new capability allows a voxel to be clipped to an elevation surface or to the top and bottom of a lithologic unit.

To further support the use and integration of 3D models, Target’s section generation module now allows for the slicing of Geosoft voxels and topographic surfaces represented by 2D grids Surpac DTM and Datamine Wireframe models at any section orientation. Voxel slicing is also supported in Plan generation.

Mine Modeling Data Support

With 6.3, Geosoft has implemented support of Datamine™ file formats, including point (string) read/write support; wireframe (triangulation) read support; and Block Model conversion to Geosoft voxels. Users can display string and triangulation formats in 2D plans and sections or 3D views, and also incorporate Datamine block models, along with other supported data formats, into 2D or 3D.

SEMplot Geochemistry workflow

Geosoft’s Geochemistry extension, available for Oasis montaj and Target, now includes SEMplot (Scanning Electron Microscopy) geochemistry workflow. SEMplot’s simple-to-use workflow enables geoscientists to efficiently visualize kimberlite indicator mineral grain geochemical data obtained from surface and kimberlite rock samples thereby, accelerating potential diamond target definition

Originally developed by Rio Tinto Exploration, SEMplot allows geoscientists to efficiently determine mineral identification of grains based on their geochemical stoichiometry. They can display and select mineral grains on standard published discriminating graphs, or graphs and overlays they have created themselves.
