April 20, 2005 - Toronto, ON - Geosoft Incorporated, a leading provider of geospatial mapping software, announced today the continuation of a Cooperative Agreement between Geosoft and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Huntsville Center. Now in its fifth year, this technology development partnership will build on Geosoft's industry standard Oasis montaj mapping software, used in Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) detection, to deliver enhanced efficiency and accuracy in UXO investigations.

Funded under the US Department of Defense's Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), the new agreement for Phase V includes an increased financial commitment and scope of work. "This is exciting news for Geosoft and for the UXO market", says Lorraine Godwin, Geosoft Government Business Manager. "The ambitious scope of work is a strong vote of confidence in Geosoft's ability to understand the unique needs of the UXO community, and pioneer new cutting-edge technologies. The DOD's leadership in funding the development of software, which increases the efficiency and minimizes the risks in UXO detection, is setting new standards that are being adopted worldwide."

The UXO Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QAQC) software tools that were developed under previous phases of this project are currently being employed on UXO sites around the world to improve data quality and detection methods through Geosoft's Oasis montaj™ interface. Government geophysical data contractors now have the capability to quickly verify collected data and to make better informed decisions prior to demobilization. The Oasis montaj™ platform for algorithms-sharing disseminates innovative research and technology to field investigators, and equips UXO teams with a standardized tool set to successfully meet the stringent guidelines of Government reviewers.

Further development to the software platform will focus on providing enhanced, targeted applications for a higher level of precision in authenticating UXO sites. The scope of work for Phase V encompasses over 45 functions, including: a shortest path calculation for reacquiring UXO targets; the calculation of signal-to-noise ratio; distance and velocity calculations; and GPS data correction tools.

"These new applications will simplify detection procedures and provide faster, more accurate assessments," says USACE Geophysicist, Amy Walker. "In the past, we've challenged Geosoft to address the specific challenges of the UXO market and were very pleased with the results. We look forward to the development of new solutions, which build on past successes, to deliver an advanced Commercial-Off-The-Shelf UXO software system."

In the United States alone, UXO sites cover millions of acres of land. Many of these areas are scheduled to be returned to civilian use and must undergo a thorough remediation process. The price tag for identifying and disposing of UXOs is in the billions of dollars. Using Geosoft's advanced geophysical data processing and sub-surfacing mapping software, UXO detection is less expensive, more accurate and safer for field workers dealing with sensitive materials.
