San Antonio, Texas, USA, April 6, 2003 – Geosoft Incorporated, a provider of geoscientific data solutions, announced today, at the Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems (SAGEEP 2003), the release of Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) software for Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) geophysical field data.

The software is the first product of a Cooperative Agreement between Geosoft Incorporated and the US Army Corps of Engineers (Huntsville Center) to develop and test Quality Control and Quality Assurance software systems for UXO detection, and to provide a software platform for future development and deployment of other geophysical discrimination algorithms. The Agreement is funded under the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP).

QC and QA Software

Comprised of two distinct modules, the QC and QA software has been designed to improve the quality of data collected in the field, and to ultimately improve UXO detection methods. The Quality Control Module provides Government geophysical data contractors with the capability to verify their data quickly and easily while in the field. The tests are designed to flag any questionable data so that the contractor can make an informed decision as to whether that area should be resurveyed.

The Quality Assurance Module assists Government performed Quality Assurance of the contractor’s results. It provides Government reviewers with the ability to verify whether the contractor’s team performed the UXO detection and clearance operations within an acceptable level.

As part of its Cooperative Agreement with the Huntsville Center, Geosoft has coded the complete QA/QC tool set into their open, industry-standard Oasis montaj™ interface.

Cooperative Agreement

Geosoft and the Huntsville Center have entered into a Cooperative Agreement, funded under ESTCP, to develop standard QC/QA tools and procedures for the UXO community.

The objectives of Cooperative Agreement are to: standardize QC/QA procedures within the UXO community; automate software tests to allow for improved data quality; improve UXO detection methods; and provide a standard PC-based software platform for algorithm-sharing.

"There is a proven connection between repetitive data quality issues with resurveying and lost productivity in UXO investigations," said Scott Millhouse, Huntsville Center. "The standard tests and software tools developed in collaboration with Geosoft will enable the contractors tasked with collecting, processing and analyzing the data to be more effective in meeting Government data quality standards."

According to Millhouse, the decision to partner with Geosoft was made based on the need to build a mature and comprehensive technological solution that could be made readily available to the UXO community on a standard software platform.

"Our goal was to migrate the QC/QA tools to a commercial platform that would ensure easy access by contractors, and Geosoft’s Oasis Montaj interface was already established as an industry-standard platform," said Millhouse. "Geosoft’s commercial UXO product was also used by many of our geophysical contractors."

"The cooperative partnership has proven to be a good model for problem solving in the UXO community," said Tim Dobush, Geosoft CEO, "and it’s been a valuable experience for Geosoft as a solution provider. We’ve gained a better understanding of how our software is being used in the UXO field, and we will be able to apply this insight into future technology development."
