Opening large databases (.gdb) in Oasis montaj running in Windows XP

Oasis montaj users using Microsoft's XP operating system reported that opening large databases in Oasis montaj can take an unreasonable amount of time (10-20 minutes in some reported cases). We found that the "System Restore" feature in XP interprets files with extension ".gdb" as system files, and makes a backup copy of such files. This needless backup can be very slow for large .gdb files, and in fact, may fail if there is insufficient disk space. What is Geosoft doing about this?

As an interim solution for users who have upgraded to 5.1.6, we have created a Hotfix, a small executable that will alter the XP system file (filelist.xml). This will remove the .gdb extension from the list and turn off the system restore feature for .gdb files. This executable will be included on the 5.1.6 CD and will be available from our website.

Important Note: You must upgrade to version 5.1.6 before installing the Hotfix!

To apply the Hotfix, upgrade to version 5.1.6 and then download this executable file from: http://www.geosoft.com/downloads/OASISmontaj51/xphotfix.exe.

To make sure that these changes are applied, on the final installation screen, select Yes to restart your computer. As always, if you have any questions or problems please contact your local Technical Support Representative for assistance.
