Anglo American optimizes delivery of exploration data to global teams with Geosoft DAP Server

"Being involved in the evaluation of DAP Technology and working with the Geosoft team in development of a DAP Server implementation for our organization has been a rewarding experience, and is leading to what promises to be a truly exciting data management product."

Summary

With no end in sight to the data explosion in the exploration industry, there is a growing imperative for mining companies to think ten years down the road, when handling huge volumes of data will eventually become too costly for those without an adequate information management system. Anglo American foresaw the need, and implemented Geosoft DAP Server as a solution for cataloguing, publishing and delivering its vast data resources to the company’s network of geoscientists.

Business Need:
Anglo American Exploration needed a solution for efficient delivery and retrieval of large volumes of digital exploration data to their global network of geoscientists.

Geosoft Solution:
Geosoft DAP Server was implemented to deliver data, in various native formats (MapInfo, Geosoft, Arcview, geo-referenced raster imagery) and different map projections, to Anglo American’s global network of geoscientists. As part of the implementation, ametadata catalogue was created, documenting approximately 2,500 individual data themes. Geosoft DAP was interfaced with an Oasis montaj client for the delivery of geoscientific data within their internal network of geoscientists.

Results:
Geosoft DAP Server provided a methodology to properly catalogue data, and the means to publish and deliver the data for easy desktop access.  Geosoft DAP Server also resolved the issue of dealing with different data formats and projections. As a result, geologists sitting at their personal computers could outline a map area and download data sets for that area in just about any format or projection they needed from the Geosoft DAP server.
