Geosoft mapping software for geophysics, geology, geochemistry

System Requirements

Geosoft DAP is a multi-threaded server application that will take maximum advantage of multiple processors and available memory. The more processors and memory on the server, the better the performance will be. The requirements listed below are guidelines. Speed and performance of a DAP server will be dependent on the hardware configuration and the data serving demands of your site.

Corporate DAP Server

A Geosoft DAP server should be dedicated to providing Geosoft DAP services only in order to provide the required performance and responses to requests from data users. The minimum recommended DAP server configuration for a corporate DAP solution is:

Operating System

Windows 2003 Server R2 SP2 Standard Edition
or
Windows 2008 Server R2 (64 -bit) Standard Edition

Web Server

IIS 6.0 for Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Standard Edition
or
IIS 7.5 for Windows 2008 Server R2 (64 -bit) Standard Edition

Database

SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition SP1
or
SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition SP1

Memory

Recommended: 8 GB RAM
Minimum: 4 GB RAM

CPU/Disk Space

Recommended: Dual processor (minimum 2.0 GHz in speed)
50GB SCSI hard drive for operating system
500GB to 1TB hard drive with RAID 5 configuration to store datasets
100-500GB hard drive to store DAP temporary files
50GB for SQL Server metadata database
Minimum: Sufficient amount of physical disk space to hold all data to be served.

Operating System Support

Operating system (OS) and hardware purchases represent a significant investment for our customers. Knowing when to upgrade to a new operating system can be challenging, so we've created some charts to help you understand our plans for supporting our software on Windows.

The chart below shows the length of Microsoft's mainstream support for each version of Windows and Geosoft's plan for supporting each version of Windows once Microsoft's mainstream support has ended.

Geosoft OS support policy

During the support period for a version of Windows, Geosoft will test our software to ensure that it works on that versions of Windows. The Geosoft Support teams will have access to and be trained on supporting customers on the OS.

Some Geosoft software installations may require a specific Windows service pack version, or have a certain limitations (32 or 64 bit support). For example, Oasis montaj 7.2 requires Windows XP SP3. For specific details, see the system requirements section for your Geosoft software version.

Microsoft mainstream and extended support policy

The Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy FAQ outlines their basic policy: Mainstream support is provided for 5 years or for 2 years after the next successive OS is released. After this period, the OS enters an Extended support cycle. The important factor about the extended support period is that no ports are made of new technology into the OS. For example, the .NET 3.5 framework will not be ported to an older OS than Windows XP
