Featured in Mining Journal: Geosoft software aids Medgold targeting

Medgold Resources will be looking for a new 3000m drilling program at the Lagares gold project in north-western Portugal to confirm its theories about the potential below past, shallow drilling and further validate a new geological model it sees as having opened up the “wider regional potential throughout Valongo Belt”.

Mediterranean-focused Medgold is exploring the orogenic gold provinces of northwest Iberia. At Lagares, where exploration manager Jim Royall said the company was walking in the footsteps of four other companies and six previous drilling campaigns, Medgold’s drill-hole database includes information from 138 diamond holes and 307 percussion holes totalling more than 10km of drilling.

Royall said the company was working to fully understand the geology and controls on mineralisation with the aid of advanced 3D exploration software. Medgold used Geosoft’s Target exploration software to help it prioritise targeting work.

“Our goal is not to drill more, but to drill sooner and more effectively,” he said.

Target was “very intuitive and easy to learn” for Royall and his team. “But the key is how well it integrates surface data and downhole drill data. With the wireframing features now incorporated, it’s also able to meet our 3D geology requirements.

“Target will play a major role in the development of our geological model, and we expect to fully utilise its powerful data processing and analysis tools to optimise data interpretation.”
