    KEGS Talk 2014-09-09: Practical methods for large multi-parameter 3D inversion models


    Tools are now readily available to independently invert in 3D multiple geophysical dataset covering large areas at high resolution. The resulting models, however, can present dauntingly large volumes which can be challenging to display, integrate and interpret in an effective fashion.

    In this talk, Peter Diorio, from GeophysicsOne Inc. introduces some simple tools to integrate such multi-parameter models and display them in a geologically intuitive manner.

    Illustrations are presented using 3D density and susceptibility models calculated using public domain airborne gravity gradiometry and mag data collected over the McFauld’s Lake chromite-Ni-Cu camp in northwestern Ontario.

    Magnetic Vector Inversion: A simple approach to the challenge of varying direction of rock magnetization

    Modelling of local magnetic field anomalies, and in particular 3D voxel-based modelling, is now a primary tool in exploration targeting. The majority of current voxel-based magnetic inversions assume anomalous magnetization in the direction of the inducing earth's field as described by Li and Oldenberg (1993). However, as noted in numerous studies and the practical experience of many modellers, the direction of rock magnetization, particularly in strongly magnetized rocks, is often in a direction different from the primary geomagnetic field. This may be due to any combination of remanent magnetization, demagnetization, anisotropy of magnetic minerals or perhaps even other phenomena not yet understood.

    Ellis et al (2012) developed the Magnetic Vector Inversion (MVI) method to directly model the vector of magnetization based only on anomalous TMI data. The method allows the modelling optimization process the freedom to orient the direction of magnetization to best fit the observed data. Notably, the MVI method does not concern itself with the reason for varying magnetization direction, which is left to the interpreter to ponder together with other information that may be at hand.

    In this case-study work we demonstrate the application of MVI to particularly challenging and well known magnetic anomalies in both Brazil and Australia

    In this online seminar, Natalie Green will use Target and Target for ArcGIS on two exploration projects at different stages of development. Recorded May 7, 2014. The first project features Eagle Plains Resources in BC. Natalie demonstrates collaboration between geologists and other specialists and how it advanced the project from mapping to drilling. The second project features Alamos Gold at Quartz Mountain in south-central Oregon. She shows how they modelled historical drill data and worked with the resource modelling team.

    See how to use the Iterative Reweighting Inversion and Magnetization Vector Inversion (MVI) methods in Geosoft VOXI Earth Modelling to create refined 3D subsurface models that more accurately reflect geological features.

    Iterative Reweighting Inversion focusing (IRI) takes an initial inversion result and uses it as an Iterative Reweighting constraint in a subsequent inversion. This process is repeated several times in order to produce a refined or "focused" final inversion result.

    Magnetization Vector Inversion (MVI) inverts for the magnitude and direction of the magnetization vector and incorporates both remanent and induced magnetization without any prior knowledge of the direction or strength of remanent magnetization.

    This talk provides a general review of methods used in geophysics to explore for economic minerals and map lithology. The measurement of five physical properties dominates the methodologies used in mining exploration geophysics. These are: magnetic susceptibility (magnetometer), specific gravity (gravity), electrical conductivity/resistivity (electromagnetic and electrical), acoustic impedance (seismic) and nuclear radiation (gamma). The identification of physical properties and contrasts, the instruments used to detect them, and the processing/ presentation of the data are at the core of exploration geophysics.

    This presentation reviews instruments, mineral properties, some discoveries, applications and products across a wide range.

    This presentation describes the misalignment between the current mineral industry practice and the future mineral and resource needs of society. Meeting these needs will requiring a fundamental shift how the mineral industry does their exploration targeting. Exploration will need to shift from looking at longer life but increasingly lower grade and high energy consumption brownfield deposits to seeking higher quality greenfield deposits. Finding new mineral districts, particularly those in areas of challenging cover, will require innovations in both technology and understanding mineral systems on a greater scale.
