What do you do at Geosoft?

I’m a Senior Information Designer in the Services department. It’s a technical communications role that answers a customer’s need for useful and timely help – a vital offering when it comes to understanding how best to use our powerful and versatile software.

What is unique about your role at Geosoft?

This role is unique in that there’s only one person filling it – namely me. Obvious statements aside, it’s a role that goes beyond technical writing to actually design the customer help program around the customer’s needs, the information products involved, and the means by which they're easily accessible and usable. Moreover, the help we’re offering now attempts to address various learning levels, methods, and makes sense from a holistic learning perspective.

What do you think potential employees should know about Geosoft?

It’s probably the smallest “big” company you’ll work for, in that it’s a global organization spread across several continents that manages thousands of clients, large and small. Yet, it’s strived to maintain a work environment where you don’t feel like a cog in a machine and can actually be seen and heard for the unique voice you bring. It’s people over processes; not the other way around.

What do you like best about the company?

It’s a company with heart. You’re not lost in the HR rolls nor are you made to feel expendable. The tenure of some of my colleagues still amazes me, who’ve dedicated their career to this organization. I think a lot has to do with how the company works to ensure you’re accommodated and supported in every way possible. In my case, personal circumstances required that I relocate and work primarily from home. Well, it’s been almost two years doing it and while I miss the daily workplace interactions, I’m afforded every resource and am supported by processes and tools to do my job really well from home.

What do you enjoy most about your job at Geosoft?

In my role, I have the fortune of working with diverse teams and departments. I’m ever amazed by how teams with disparate skills and thinking styles come together at the table to work out great customer-focused products and solutions. It makes me feel like I’m working at an organization where the arm knows what the leg is doing and vice versa. I particularly enjoy the fact that specialists like me are afforded a good deal of autonomy and accountability, so I feel truly responsible for and empowered in what I deliver.

Outside of working hours, where might we find you?

Family and travel probably sums it up best. I really believe in working to live; not the other way around and so does Geosoft, so we’re good there! Travelling is a passion of mine and together with family, I’ve been to 23 countries and counting, including a trip to Australia/New Zealand where, as part of the annual Work-a-Week-Away “lottery,” I was granted the opportunity to work a week in the Perth office and see how my colleagues Down Under do their thing. Writing and reading round out my other occupiers of time, including a fervent interest in philosophy, science and current affairs. And one day, hope to see if the answer to life, the universe and everything is indeed 42.
